Growth and development in Pakenham VIC
Pakenham's post office opened in 1859 and the railway reached the town in 1877. Today it is the most populous suburb in Cardinia Shire, with 54,118 residents at the 2021 Census against 46,421 five years earlier. Much of that growth came through estates such as Lakeside and Cardinia Lakes, and Cardinia Road station began services in 2012. The result is a suburb where homes built across several decades sit within a few streets of each other.
The 2021 Census counted 54,118 people, up from 46,421 in 2016.
Pakenham sits about 53 km south east of the Melbourne CBD.
Cardinia Road station carried its first trains on 22 April 2012.
The Pakenham Bypass takes Gippsland traffic around the town via the Princes Freeway.
Mixed ages of housing mean one street can need a new build inspection and the next a pre-purchase.
